Living with diabetes
|
From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I’m Jeff Levine with HHS HealthBeat.
Nearly 24 million Americans have diabetes. Almost six million of them are undiagnosed.
Diabetes puts people at risk for complications such as blindness, amputations, kidney disease, heart disease and stroke. But controlling blood sugar as soon after diagnosis as possible can reduce the chances of these health problems.
Marti Funnell of the University of Michigan chairs the National Diabetes Education Program, a partnership of the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and more than 200 other organizations.
[Marti Funnell speaks] "It’s easier to manage your diabetes if you set goals and make a plan that includes specific actions you can take to reach your goals. Ask for help from friends and family and your health care team, and know you’re not alone."
