From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I’m Ted Pestorius with HHS HealthBeat.

Antiviral drugs can help fight the flu, but treatment is especially important for certain people, whether it’s the 2009 H1N1 or the seasonal flu.

At the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Dr. Tony Fiore says most people will recover from the flu without treatment. But Dr. Fiore says some people should definitely discuss treatment with a doctor as soon as they become ill:

[Dr. Tony Fiore speaks] "First, those who are severely ill with influenza, such as those who are hospitalized or whose illness has deteriorated to concerning signs and symptoms – such as shortness of breath, chest pain or pressure, dizziness or confusion and, second, patients who are at higher risk for influenza-related complications."

Dr. Fiore says these patients should get treatment with antivirals as soon as possible after the illness starts.
