Flu and antivirals
|
From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I’m Ted Pestorius with HHS HealthBeat.
In some cases, there’s more you can do for the flu than treat the symptoms. Prescription antiviral drugs can make you feel better a bit faster or make the symptoms a bit milder.
At the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Dr. Joe Bresee notes that the treatment works best if the drugs are taken within two days of getting sick. He also notes that, because of the H1N1 pandemic, some people need those drugs more than others:
[Dr. Joe Bresee speaks] "Our priority will be to treat the most severely ill patients, such as people who are hospitalized, but also people who are sick but have underlying conditions that predispose them to being severely ill if they get the flu."
These patients include pregnant women, the youngest children, the elderly, and people with underlying chronic conditions such as heart disease.
