From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I’m Ira Dreyfuss with HHS HealthBeat.

A study finds the baby weight is hard to make go away when a pregnant woman who is already obese gains the weight.

Kimberly Vesco of the Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research in Portland, Oregon, found that in Kaiser Permanente’s records on more than 1,600 pregnancies of obese women. She says many gained more than the recommendations:

[Kimberly Vesco speaks] "Almost three quarters of our patients gained over 15 pounds during pregnancy and a large proportion of them also were retaining that weight after delivery."

The study found 40 percent of the weight gained during pregnancy was still there a year after the birth. And the greater the gain, the less likely women were to lose it all.

The study in the journal Obstetrics and Gynecology was supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
