Lead, bones, hearts and death
|
From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I’m Ira Dreyfuss with HHS HealthBeat.
Researchers have another indication that exposure to lead can lead to death.
They found that by using an X-ray technique to check levels of lead in the bones of men, as a way to look at lead that accumulates over time. Typically, lead levels have been examined in blood.
The men were first tested at an average age of 67, and were followed for about nine years.
At the Harvard School of Public Health, Marc Weisskopf:
[Marc Weisskopf speaks] "Men with the highest levels of lead in their bone compared to those with the lowest had about a two-fold increased rate of all-cause mortality, about a two and a half fold increased rate of death from cardiovascular disease and about an eight-fold increased risk of death from ischemic heart disease."
The study in Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association was supported by the National Institutes of Health.
