From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I’m Ted Pestorius with HHS HealthBeat.

Two or more servings of fruit and three or more servings of vegetables, each day. That’s what health experts think we should eat. But do we?

Researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention looked at state data for fruit and vegetable consumption. And they found that no state population even comes close to eating the daily recommended amounts.

At the CDC, researcher Heidi Blanck:

[Heidi Blanck speaks]``Only 33 percent of adults meet the recommendations for fruit consumption, and only 27 percent get the recommended vegetables.’’

And high school students did even worse.

Eating lots of fruits and vegetables is important for healthy weight and prevention of chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and some cancers. And kids get better growth with enough fruits and vegetables.

The report is the CDC’s first state-by-state review of fruits and vegetable consumption.
