HHS HealthBeat (December 01, 2009)
Almost 8 percent
|
From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I’m Jeff Levine with HHS HealthBeat.
The number of Americans with diabetes is huge – nearly 24 million people ages 20 or older, almost 8 percent of the population. Another 57 million people have prediabetes, where blood sugar levels are high, but not as high as in diabetes.
Diabetes may be treated with drugs or the hormone insulin. A good diet and careful monitoring of blood sugar are crucial. And the director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, Dr. Griffin Rodgers, adds:
[Dr. Griffin Rodgers speaks] ``Physical activity 30 minutes a day on most days – or certainly five days a week – is a good place to start because that tends to maintain the blood sugar in a more normal range.’’
And losing a few pounds, with proper eating and physical activity, can reduce chances of getting diabetes.
