Heading off diabetes
From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I’m Ira Dreyfuss with HHS HealthBeat.
A lot of people at high risk of diabetes can keep from getting it. Researcher David Nathan of Massachusetts General Hospital says he can prove that in a look at 10 years of data on people who were at a high risk.
Nathan says people who did the equivalent of a brisk 30-minute walk once a day, and controlled their eating, kept off a crucial 5 pounds over those 10 years. He says their risk of diabetes was about one third lower.
Nathan says the drug metformin had a similar effect, but not as pronounced.
[David Nathan speaks] "We can actually push back, delay or prevent the development of diabetes in a substantial fraction of people over a long period of time. That means almost certainly that they will be healthier."
The Diabetes Prevention Program Outcomes Study, reported in The Lancet was supported by the National Institutes of Health.
